Condensed Air Cans Annual Sales

I was able to find a brief summary of the survey that gave estimates for total production of the aerosol industry at 4 billion units.  The total figure does not help us out very much, as there are a lot of alternative uses for aerosol that we do not care about.  To narrow the data down to only condensed dust-cleaners, I found data from the U.K. that breaks down total aerosol sales into separate categories and lists the number of units sold within each category.  In order to make the U.K. data be applicable for the U.S., I converted each category in the U.K. data to a percentage of total sales and then multiplied this percentage times the total unit sales from the U.S. data (this assumes that the breakdown of aerosol sales across categories is similar between the U.S. and U.K.).  My results are on the following pages.

U.S. aerosol production in 2008 was the fifth highest year for the industry, according to CSPA’s 58 the annual Aerosol Pressurized Products Survey. North America maintained a one-third market share of global aerosol production, with personal care and household products ranked as the two strongest product categories. The survey estimated overall unit production of 3.643 billion aerosols in the U.S. in 2008 — a 0.3 percent decrease from 2007, which was the third highest year for production at 3.655 billion units. The highest year recorded was in 2005 with 3.738 billion units produced. CSPA estimated total North American aerosol production in 2008 as 4.072 billion units, representing a 0.8 percent decline from 2007.

The survey, which reports the unit volume of aerosols filled and shipped for domestic use in 2008, as well as estimates for Canadian and Mexican production, has served for more than half a century as the primary index of the business strength of the aerosol products industry. The survey was released at CSPA’s Mid-Year Meeting in Chicago, IL.”

“In fact, the chemical propellant used in Dust-Off is common in the aerosol industry, and Dust-Off represents less than 1 percent of the aerosol industry's annual domestic sales of 3.5 billion units.”

Using annual unit sales of 4 billion (taken from the summarized survey results on the previous page), we get the following table of likely candidates.  Depending on which category compressed-air electronic dusters fall under, our results will change.  One of the following categories should be a fairly decent estimate on the sales level of compressed-air dust cleaners.

Category Unit Sales
Waxes / Polishes 93,415,504
Window / Glass Cleaners.  Other Household 226,078,495
Other Personal 69,737,269
Industrial 55,465,456
Miscellaneous 55,789,815
